Get to know the Medieval Istria

The small towns in the interior of Istria are mostly located on top of hills that provided them with natural protection. Because of the frequent attacks of neighboring feudal lords or Venice, the cities were additionally protected by city walls with a series of towers and turrets and often with a movable bridge. While on the outside it looks like a fortress, the medieval city is intertwined with narrow curving streets that follow the circular flow of the city walls, and the center of town life is the church and the square. The town lodges were built at the end of the Middle Ages, with the strengthening of the urban culture. It is a place where citizens gather, a place where decisions of the city fathers are passed. They were used in all forms of public life. If they were outside the city walls, by the entrance towers or gates, they served as a shelter for passengers at the time when the city gate was closed.
